Ayurvedic Drinks // Jamu Kunyit Turmeric Elixir

Bali, Indonesia… a beautiful island only a short flight from Australia and a place many call their second home. With warm balmy nights, fresh healthy food, waterfalls and motorbike riding along rice paddy fields it’s no wonder most people’s passports end up with a few visa extensions before they make it back to their homeland shores.
On my latest trip to Bali, after a midnight-freezing-cold-air-conditioned flight from Chennai to Denpasar, I started to feel some flu like symptoms creeping up. Wanting to nip it in the bud, I remembered the Balinese Jamu drinks – traditional Indonesian herbal medicine elixirs used for thousands of years to aid in healing the body. One in particular that’s incredible for cold and flu like symptoms is Jamu Kunyit – a turmeric, tamarind, lemon, honey ELIXIR highly regarded in Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine.

TURMERIC – the ‘Granddaddy’ of all spices – is an incredible multi-faceted healer that works in supporting the bodies immune system and nervous system (assisting in a healthy response to stress), promotes radiant skin (supporting antioxidant protection against free radicals), healthy digestion, healthy bone, joint and skeletal function, and is great for blood and liver function too. For women turmeric also aids in supporting the reproductive system.

Watch Widhi my beautiful Balinese friend give us a little class on how to make Jamu Kunyit so you can drink the health giving benefits of this delicious turmeric elixir everyday.

In a Blender add:
2-4 pieces (5cm or so) of turmeric (depending on how potent you want it add more or less turmeric to water ratio)
1 cup of warm water
1 teaspoon of fresh tamarind (seeds removed – can buy packaged from most health food shops or asian supermarkets)
Tulsi leaves (optional – Tulsi is Holy Basil)
Blend for a few minutes then strain through a sieve into a glass or mason jar – I like using glass jars so you can store it in the fridge and have a Jamu shot whenever you feel like it!
For more flavour add (optional):
1 tsp RAW organic honey
1 tsp lime juice
Pinch salt

Drink and be Happy.
