Applesauce Brownies – Easy Dessert For Healthy Eaters

Brownies come in all shapes, flavors and fills. If you are looking for the brownie taste but a healthy feel, try applesauce brownies.

Brownies are one of our favorite desserts. Kids love them but so do grown-ups. And, they are such versatile trees. You can make them thin and chewy or thick and fluffy. Ice them, glaze them or fill them – it does not matter. They will still be good.

One thing that people worry about is the calories. Some have opted for desserts that do not taste too good or no dessert at all for the sake of their health. The good news is that brownies can go low profile so that they are tasty but do not provide the fat or calories that they once did.

By utilizing different add-in ingredients, you can form the brownie that works best for you. This is a great reason to make a brownie from scratch. You never know what is in the store bought brownie mix. Beside, your kids will get the chance to bake them with lighter ingredients and see how the final product is still enjoyable.

You may recognize applesauce as a recipe substitute. In box cakes and brownie mixes, it is often used in place of half of the oil that the recipe calls for. It is wet and provides moisture without all of the fat.

In the following recipe for applesauce brownies you will notice that there is no chocolate added. Not all brownies do contain chocolate but that is not what makes them brownies. It is the consistency and the way that they are baked that is the difference between brownies and cookies and other dessert confections. There is, however, cocoa powder in the recipe to give your creation the brown coloring.

This is what you'll need:


  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • 9 x 13 baking dish (glass or metal)
  • Spatula


  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 c cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • C cup butter or margarine
  • 2 tbsp. Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 2 cups applesauce
  • 1 tsp. Ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. Baking soda

The Recipe:

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees while you combine ingredients to make the batter.

Step 2: Let butter or margarine come to room temperature. Combine it with sugar until creamed.

Step 3: Whisk eggs together in a cup. Add them to the butter and sugar mixture. Mix well.

Step 4: Sift together dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Add them to the batter alternating with the applesauce until all are combined well.

Step 5: Pour into a 9 x 13 baking pan. Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Applesauce brownies are a treat for anyone but especially those who want to have their brownie fix and stay healthy too!
